Internship — Legal Hotline for Texans
About the program:
Our Legal Hotline for Texans helps those 60 and older with civil legal aid issues that typically arise in one's old age. These are issues like advance directives, power of attorney, guardianship, Medicaid, Medicare, and public benefits. The hotline assists all clients over the phone offering free counsel and advice.
The type of work you'll be doing:
You will work closely with our attorneys to find answers and additional resources for our clients. These resources range from free legal forms to government organizations — giving you a well-rounded understanding of resources available to elderly Texans. You will be doing a lot of writing: drafting documents, updating educational publications, and inputting client notes.
What you can expect to learn:
You'll be exposed to the gamut of civil law but will have a deeper understanding of the range of practice areas that affects seniors with lower-income. The main areas you will learn are end-of-life planning, estate planning, accessing public benefits, and housing. In addition to researching the above, you'll learn how to expand your research skills beyond simply Westlaw and Lexes.
You can expect to learn composure in a professional office setting, how to speak directly with clients, and how to problem-solve legal issues in real-time. You will also hone your professional writing skills.
Currently enrolled in an accredited law school or paralegal certification program.
Who you'll be reporting to:
