Legal Advocate — Crime Victims

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified. 

 

The Crime Victims Legal Advocate is expected to fulfill the mission of Texas Legal Services Center by working with our team to provide holistic legal services to victims of violent crime, especially victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The Legal Advocate will conduct trauma-informed in-depth screenings of all clients to gather information, create safety plans, make appropriate referrals to other service providers, and work alongside other team members to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our clients.

Requirements

(Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor’s Degree and four (4) years of relevant work experience or a Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or other similar fields of study. Additional relevant education and experience will be considered. Experience working with victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and/or stalking required. Fluency in Spanish is required.

  • Occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, and good hand to finger dexterity, handling, and feeling; frequent repetitive motions;

  • Operate computer screens and keyboards for extended periods of time;

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually very quiet;

  • Ability to read and write in English and to communicate by telephone;

  • Occasional lifting (up to 10 lbs.) of files, supplies, and office equipment.

 

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

We are seeking a Legal Advocate who will interview victims of violent crimes to provide detailed accounts of incidents to attorneys for use in the legal system. Will also provide support, advocacy, and outreach services for crime victims. Duties of the position include: 

  • Conduct trauma-informed interviews of victims of violent crimes.

  • Provide holistic, comprehensive, trauma-informed advocacy to crime victims seeking resource/referral services both in-person and by phone.

  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with community partners to build a capacity to expedite better results for victims.

  • Assist with safety-planning, legal options, supportive counseling, filing protective orders, applications for crime victim’s compensation, court accompaniment, and systems advocacy.

  • Advocate on behalf of victims within various systems including housing, financial literacy, health care, education, and public benefits needs.

  • Work with attorneys to ensure an atmosphere of empathy, safety, and support. 

  • Attend and participate in multi-disciplinary collaborative meetings as assigned.

  • Participate in interdisciplinary cross-trainings with other community partners as assigned.

  • Maintain the highest level of professionalism when working with other Texas Legal Services Center staff, other legal aid programs, governmental and funding entities, and the public.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by senior management and the Managing Attorney.

  • Communicate effectively internally and with outside organizations.

  • Communicate with callers and clients in a culturally sensitive, trauma-informed manner.

  • Team player with exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with diverse personalities.

  • Self-starter with the ability to multi-task and complete the required assignment promptly.

  • Experience using Microsoft Office and other software.

  • Prior experience in crisis counseling preferred.

  • Some travel is required.
