Paralegal Summer Internship, Legal Hotline for Texans
The Legal Hotline for Texans gives advice and counsel to all callers with Medicare and Medicaid questions. We also answer a variety of calls to those over 60 years of age including Advance Directives, Long Term Care, Defense of Guardianship Economic security and Exploitation, Abuse, Neglect and Fraud (as funding allows). The Legal Hotline for Texans also trains staff and volunteers at area agencies to assist their clients with Medicare/Medicaid issues.
RESPONSIBILITIES
You will be in the frontlines of our work to empower underserved Texans through legal education, advocacy, advice, and representation. You’ll work with clients over the phone to determine their legal needs and eligibility for our services. Our paralegal students will also be responsible for legal and administrative functions such entering data into case management systems, researching questions from clients, logging phone calls, and attending trainings.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN
You will interact with clients and will learn various aspects of Medicare and Medicaid, including program eligibility as well as substantive law. You will learn the ins-and-outs of Texas laws and procedures surrounding this issue, and gain experience in the public service sector. In addition, you’ll be able to:

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPENSATION
Currently enrolled in an accredited paralegal certificate program.
This is an unpaid, in-person internship in Austin, TX. Reporting and oversight available for course credit during the 2023 Summer Semester.
