Asks IRS to terminate nonprofit status of AFLC and accuses it of defrauding thousands of Texans
TEXAS -- January 8, 2025 — Attorneys with Texas Legal Services Center
(TLSC) filed a formal complaint with the Internal Revenue Service today demanding the
termination of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit status of the America Family Law Center (AFLC).
“AFLC must not be allowed to use its nonprofit status to trick vulnerable Texans into
believing that it will actually help them with family law cases, when it actually cons them
out of their hard-earned money,” Wayne Krause Yang, TLSC attorney, said about the
complaint’s allegations. “America Family Law Center is a scam.”
The complaint was filed in Dallas today on behalf of TLSC and its client, Stacey Jenny,
a Houston resident. Ms. Jenny said, “AFLC promised me that its lawyers would write
legal documents to help me win my child custody case. It was not until after it stole
thousands of dollars from me that I learned that America Family Law Center does not
actually represent clients. I lost my case – and more importantly, my granddaughter –
because AFLC tricked me. Don’t trust America Family Law Center!”
"I lost my case – and more importantly, my granddaughter – because AFLC tricked me. Don’t trust America Family Law Center!"
“TLSC has received complaints from dozens of people across Texas about America
Family Law Center making false promises, targeting Texans who have little or no
money and have a family law crisis, taking their money, then failing to provide the
services it promised.” said Colette Billings, attorney at TLSC. “America Family Law
Center solicits calls from approximately 2,000 people every week and convinces large
numbers of them to pay money for services it does not provide to them.”
The formal complaint filed today states, “AFLC uses its status as a registered 501(c)(3)
organization to trick vulnerable people with little income into paying for legal assistance
that AFLC does not actually provide. It appears that AFLC misrepresents to the IRS
what it does with hundreds of thousands of dollars it swindles from these unsuspecting
people each year, including an accurate reporting of how it spends this money.”
The complaint further alleges that, “AFLC claims that it is devoted to helping people with
few resources get family law help and assistance in Texas, but in reality, AFLC does not
offer a deliverable product or service. Instead, AFLC scams desperately needed funds
from the people it purports to serve while defrauding the IRS by providing private
benefits to insiders; failing to report income and these private benefits; and misreporting
income and material facts.”
Billings said, “TLSC encourages victims and people with more information, including
former clients or employees of America Family Law Center, to contact us at
https://www.tlsc.org/socialjustice or (800) 622-2520.”
