Special Programs

Beyond our direct legal services, we have programs where we collaborate with other statewide organizations to tackle larger systemic issues on behalf of all Texans.

Medical-Legal Partnership

Medical-Legal Partnership is a collaboration that produces better health outcomes by embedding attorneys and paralegals within healthcare teams to detect, address, and prevent health-harming legal needs of individuals and communities. For example, such partnerships can force landlords to remediate poor housing conditions that aggravate a patient’s asthma, increase access to care by helping patients establish eligibility for Medicaid, improve educational services for children with special needs, or help patients escape violent domestic situations.

Our medical partners include People’s Community Clinic, Kind Clinic, and Lone Star Circle of Care. Learn more about our medical-legal partnerships here.

Impact Litigation

Our Impact Litigation team brings about social justice by bringing lawsuits intended to effect societal change. In Texas, assistance for the underrepresented is scarce, and we strive to provide a voice for those communities by championing complex cases that bring about systemic change. We file suits against perpetrators of race, sex, sexual orientation, and disability discrimination—as well as police brutality—while defending consumer rights, free speech, and privacy.

Our Impact Litigation Team's work in the news:

Fort Worth Star-Telegram: A man with Huntington’s called police for a safe ride home. He ended up in a hospital.

Waxahachie Daily Light: Waxahachie resident brings civil action lawsuit against Ellis County Sheriff’s Office

NBC DFW: Former Tenants Sue Over HMK Contracts to Buy Homes

CBS DFW: Details Emerge From Federal Lawsuit Filed Against HMK Mortgage

Legal Aid for Survivors of Sexual Assault Network

The Legal Aid for Survivors of Sexual Assault (LASSA) Network serves every Texas county, providing survivors of sexual assault with a wide range of free legal services from general advice to holistic, direct representation in civil legal matters stemming from the sexual assault. Survivors’ legal problems can include privacy violations, physical safety threats, school accommodations, employment sanctions, financial problems, and housing problems.

Attorneys answer all calls and provide clients with options, resources, and can answer any questions they may have. Callers may remain anonymous and may still call even if they have not reported the assault to law enforcement. LGBTQ+ friendly.

TexasLawHelp.org houses free, reliable legal information, court-approved forms with step-by-step instructions, a database of statewide legal help providers, and a statewide legal clinic calendar.

While Texas Legal Services Center administers the day to day functions of the site, TexasLawHelp.org is a truly statewide effort to ensure equal access to the justice system for Texans—no matter their ability to earn.

Beyond ourselves, collaborators include Texas Access to Justice Foundation Grantees, libraries, law libraries, other nonprofits, local courts, state government agencies, and advocacy organizations. These organizations help by drafting legal information articles and toolkits, developing forms, and helping us with various special programs to better serve Texans.
