Client Story: A Second Chance for a Young Mother
Afraid that her past would keep her from moving forward, Taylor needed a clean slate to begin her new career.
This fall, a young woman, Taylor, contacted us to see about sealing a misdemeanor charge that could have severely limited her
opportunities for employment. Our Transactional Legal Assistance Program worked with her to get her record sealed—just in time for her post-graduation job hunt. Taylor was kind enough to write (and let us share) her story below.
To whom may be concerned,
My name is Taylor; I am 27 with two handsome boys. I was in my last semester in college when I reached out to Texas Legal Services Center. Getting my background expunged was something I always wanted to do, I just didn’t have the money to hire a lawyer and pay for the cost to get it removed. One night I was up just thinking about my future and career, and I didn’t want my record to hinder me from getting the job that I dreamed of. I googled the courthouse down here in Beaumont, Texas, and somehow it led me to TLSC website. I scrolled through the website, and I saw that I could be eligible to get my record expunged or an order of nondisclosure.
I called the next morning and spoke with an attorney. She asked questions and was very helpful. When we ended the conversation, she emailed me the steps right away, and I went to the courthouse the next day to get the info they needed to help with my case. I scanned everything in right away back to her, she worked up my case in a very timely manner. Everything took a little over a month. The judge approved now I’m just waiting for my record to get sealed.
For many years my record has hindered me, but with the help of Texas Legal Services Center, I can put the past behind me and move forward with my career. I would like to say thank you again for your speedy and courteous service. I would like to give a special thanks to the people that donate money for these services so they may be little or no cost to the ones that aren’t able to pay for the services.
