School can bring unique challenges for kinship caregivers. Caregivers will leave with a clearer understanding of their rights and available options.

ABOUT THIS SERIES

This session is part of our free webinar series Navigating Raising Children as a Kinship Caregiver. In each session, attorneys from TLSC’s Family Helpline will explain common legal challenges kinship caregivers face.

A kinship caregiver is a person who steps in to raise a child who is not their own. A kinship caregiver might be grandparent, other relatives, or close family friends. Every kinship care situation is different. Some arrangements might be temporary, while others are long-term. They might be informal, or ordered by a court. Child Protective Services may or may not be involved. Because of these differences, caregivers can have different legal rights and responsibilities. Understanding those rights can be confusing but it’s important for making decisions for both you and the child in your care.

You will learn about your options, what steps you can take and where to find support and resources in Texas.
