About the Program
The Legal Hotline for Texans gives advice and counsel to all callers with Medicare and Medicaid questions. We can also answer a broader variety of calls to those over 60 years of age including Advance Directives, Long Term Care, Powers of Attorney, Landlord Tenant, Economic security and Exploitation, Abuse, Neglect and Fraud when funding allows. We also train staff and volunteers at area agencies to assist their clients with Medicare/Medicaid issues.
The Type of Work You'll Be Doing
An intern will interact with clients and will learn various aspects of Estate Planning, Medicare, and Medicaid, including program eligibility as well as substantive law.
You will be supervised by our co-managing attorney supervisors and will work with our callback system supervisor. You will be working with team members including our full-time staff attorney and our Network coordinator that handles our certification training program. You will be expected to attend periodic team meetings.
Responsibilities:
• Log in phone calls from hotline voicemail
• Contact potential clients for income eligibility
• Enter data into case management system
• Research questions from clients
• Attend trainings
• Draft legal documents for attorney review
NOTE: This is an onsite position, not a remote or hybrid position

QUALIFICATIONS
Currently enrolled 1L law student or higher or currently enrolled in a Paralegal Certification program.
LOCATION
Austin TX
TIME COMMITMENT
15-20 hours per week during the 2026 spring semester.
Note: Most paralegal programs require a 280-hour total work commitment.
