Texas Legal Services Center criticizes Austin Independent School District's mishandling of a former student's sexual assault, reports The Austin American Statesman.
TLSC client Julia and her mother Karen spoke joined TLSC's Wayne Kraus Yang and Ann Maldonado Heaps to speak out about AISD's failure to prevent her sexual assault and the risk to current students.
Julia, her mother, and TLSC worked with the district to develop a comprehensive sexual assault and harassment training course for their staff. AISD then reneged on its commitment to go forth with the plan, leaving current students at risk of experiencing what Julia did.
"We sincerely hope Dr. Elizalde is not going to drop the ball when it comes to preventing sexual assault and harassment," TLSC Attorney Ann Heaps said. "AISD's in-house training is not working. They desperately need help to train employees to protect students. This training won't cost a dime. To Dr. Elizalde and AISD, we ask: Don't put our children unnecessarily at risk. Don't miss this opportunity to make our schools safer."
