A coalition of legal aid organizations launched ClearPath TX – Statewide Expunction Project to expand access to criminal record clearing relief to Texans. The initiative aims to create a unified system for expunctions and nondisclosures statewide.

Approximately 5 million cases statewide are eligible for record-clearing under Texas law, yet many Texans face barriers navigating the process. This multi-phase project will reduce those barriers by developing a streamlined, user-friendly online platform to guide users from eligibility screening to case resolution. The final system will assess eligibility, generate legal documents, support e-filing, and connect users with legal assistance when needed. The project will also include strong evaluation measures to track usage, outcomes, and long-term impact.

This initiative will help Texans clear eligible records, removing barriers to employment, housing, educational opportunities, and professional licensing.

As part of this historic effort, the coalition will host the first-ever Statewide Expunction Clinic Days on July 31 and August 1.

During the Statewide Expunction Clinic Days, each participating legal aid organization will conduct expunction clinics in their respective communities. These designated days serve as a unified call to action across Texas—a moment dedicated to second chances, where individuals can take meaningful steps toward clearing their records and reclaiming opportunities.

Funded by the Texas Access to Justice Foundation, this effort is led by Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas, with partners including Lone Star Legal Aid, Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, The Beacon, and Texas Legal Services Center. Together, these organizations bring expertise in legal services, technology, and community outreach to ensure access regardless of location.

“This initiative represents a major step forward in making record clearing relief accessible to all eligible Texans,” said Angel G. Williams, Managing Attorney of the Statewide Expunction Project at Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas. “We are building a system that meets people where they are and helps them move forward.”
