Starting in March, the free online series to educate nonparent caregivers on their rights and legal options

Kinship caregivers play a critical role in keeping children safe. In Texas, over 250,000 children* live with kinship caregivers, or grandparents, relatives or family friends who step in to raise a child who is not their own. Often, these caregivers step in last minute and at great cost to their wellbeing and financial security. Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of children means supporting their kinship caregivers and families.

Texas Legal Services Center's Family Helpline helps kinship caregivers navigate the legal system to keep children safe and loved as part of the Kincare Legal Assistance Project. The upcoming free webinar series from Family Helpline, Navigating Raising Children as a Kinship Caregiver, helps kinship caregivers understand their rights and available resources. Each third Wednesday of the month, attorneys from Family Helpline explain common legal challenges and options these caregivers face. The series ends in August 2026, and recordings will be available on TexasLawHelp.org's Youtube after each session.
